Social who, me?

• Social who, me?

Social media is both a blessing and a curse. We rely too much on it's power and as an entertainer all we want is “Right Now” to happen. We don't care about putting the work in. If someone came over to us and said “Listen, I can get you one thousand fans, and make you money for doing what you love in one day...” We'd say “Okay, where do I sign.” Truth is, we don't want to do the work. Social media makes this job easier and easier. Yet, why are people still doing it wrong? Connect your Twitter to your Facebook, Tumblr, Wordpress, etc. and all you need to do is write something witty on your Twitter and it goes everywhere! Or does it?

What are you writing? This is the question I most ask myself. When you see people post things about “See my show, listen to my song, how is my video” you get annoyed. Well, if you are getting annoyed then why post the same things? Because we are emotionally attached to our dreams. People will love what I have to offer; that's a curse looming inside of an artist. Spend seven years doing it wrong and then try it again. My favorite thing about entertainers is the ten plus year syndrome. This is where they complain they haven't gone anywhere but any advice is dismissed because “They know what they are doing”. Well, stop complaining.

Good news is I am going to write this next part for me; BUT, if you are interested in utilizing it, then feel free and have at it! I enjoy using my social media as a way of creating a conversation with my audience. I take my truths of life and write about it. I give them a “With” conversation. Things about what I am doing that day, or my passions. “I really enjoyed working in the studio today writing song X”. “Oh man, I love telling jokes with my fellow comedian friends.” “There is nothing more exciting than finishing a script when memorizing!”... All truths, all a big part of my brand. Let people into your business through conversation, not Command.

Rules of Attraction • Smoking Hot; Not?

(ROA : Rules of Attraction; is an insight to how people look upon one another in this world. Less entertainment, and more a look into a person's mindset. That person, me. My thoughts on society and their desires.)

• Rules of Attraction • Smoking Hot; Not?

I have many rules when it comes to my attraction of another person; as I am sure others have rules too. How hot is a person who smokes? To me, not at all. It is gross, unhealthy and filled with a smell/taste I just can't get over. I've tried dating people who smoked to no avail. Personality is important, but if I can't see the person while they are talking; A) Because I am coughing so much, or B) I am in a fog filled room, then something is wrong. To date a person, a fan shouldn't be needed.

Also, cigarette smoke and perfume/cologne hardly go together well enough to help. When you see a very attractive person walk over to you smelling like a mixture of chimney and fried death, I lose a little interest. Yes, smoking is unhealthy, as is eating poorly, etc. You can still be healthy while eating poorly. Exercise to build up your body. Smokers who workout do almost nothing for their breathing. I can eat a hamburger and still be fine the next day. Hell, I could go running and work my heart, and pounds off. So, the health factors are far from one another.

Finally, that damn smell sticks to everything. Why shower if when you get out of the shower you are going to smoke? Worse yet, why shower if your house smells like smoke. Once you step out of the show you are stuck in stinkville. You want to smoke, smoke; just please stay away from judging me for keeping away from you. Since this is a free world, smoke away whenever you want, just remember I can do the “wave my hand in front of me and cough” move when I have to pass you. Let's settle on the facts; I am a fan of non-smokers who really care about having a nicely cleaned tongue. Smell good, taste good, love grand!

Rule of attraction; If you are smoking you're not hot.
Exception to rule; The sex can happen if you shower and brush your teeth beforehand. Just no relationship.

I have the balls to do it

• I have the balls to do it

Doing is the hardest thing in this business. Coming up with an idea, or even wanting to do something entertaining is just a start. Nothing comes from wanting, or idea building. It only gives you a start. Make moves, create action. If you have a dream go out and start doing it! It really is that simple. People can make it happen or they can just sit there and want it to happen. Either way, I have little to no care of their complaining. I get it all the time from people. “If only... (add random excuse here)”, “I don't have the time or money”, “It's someone else's fault.”, blah blah blah!!!!

You know what I had to do to make my life entertainment based? Oh, I will tell you. I had to work hard. These people who just want it to happen because they're “AWESOME” kill me. You want to know how to do it? Network, Market, and Practice! That's right : Networking with people and actually giving a crap about those you are talking. Stop making it about you! We get it, you care about yourself. The moment I changed it being about me, and showing I generally cared about the other people, everything changed. I was getting invited to events to meet important people and my name got spread around like wildfire, in a good way.

While getting people to know me, and show them I respect people I had to market the world with ME!!! That's right. I needed to get my name out there every way I could. Playing shows is a silly way to waste your time. Making your name known is a mixture of networking and marketing. Going to places you might not be playing but still giving people a part of you to go everywhere they go. Life is short, don't sit in your room waiting for something to happen because you are awesome. Network, Market, and Practice your skill, craft and the love of making your life happen by making things happen.

For love of ice cream

• For love of ice cream

I just wanted to use an ice cream photo. What did I win? That's what it was suppose to be titled. Because really; we do things that give us stuff. Why do anything unless we win something. We work for 40 hours a week and win money for our time. We play games to be the best and get trophies. No one plays to lose, or just have fun for the experience...

Wait, what am I talking about... that's the only reason you should do anything is for fun and experience. Losing teaches you, money corrupts the mind. An artist creates because that's what they know. An artist would stop creating if money was the factor, but they can't stop. It's in their blood to let these ideas come flying out. You know what though, all these artist are amazing; Music, painting, comedy, hosting, what ever it is.

So why do it other than that? Find your passion. If you want to make a living doing what you love, you are doing it for the wrong reasons. This business of entertainment will chew you up and spit you out. It throws the people who take it with greed and kills them. Those who embrace the entertainment world as what it is stay forever. Tom Hanks loves his job and everyone around him and he's doing fantastic. Be happy first...

What will you do this week

• What will you do this week

I am going to take charge of my life this week. There is so much one can only do on their own. Let me not think on it. Let me believe that I am responsible for my own actions. I have a life, a career, and a business. I wish to become the icon of “Bringing reality to your dreams”! I have a great team and I believe in them. This should mean I continue being the greatest I can be. The most productive I can be. My job is to see this company grow. Well, my company is my life first, everything else is pie. Or in this case Ice Cream... I so love Ice Cream, okay, off topic... back on. Interesting enough I know what needs to be done. Keep on being me.

Funny story about the number 3... well, I'll get back to that. Okay, speaking of that... 3 different people all said something to me this past week about working all the time. Yes, I am a busy little fellow. Why? Because I have a 10 year plan. That's right. I will work hard for 10 years then slow it down. As I have begun my journey to succeed in my life; there are certain measures I took that are in the works of bringing me complete freedom and wealth. So, why would I step back from my plan because I have a team? I should be the inspiration that allows them to believe in themselves as I believe in them.

What will you do this week? What can you do this week? You have a life that you may have been living for 10 years already and can barely read this blog; or a person who is in their late 50's reading through this thinking “It's too late to make a change”! Is it? NEVER!!! Fight for your life. You deserve to make things happen. You deserve to be the happiest human in your life above and beyond everyone. Let only you be aware of your powerful direction. Others need only know you are smiling. What will you do this week? You will say YES... you will DO... you will become the EFFORT that shall STRIVE you to ACCOMPLISH any DREAM you've ever had!

Respect the craft

• Respect the craft

Working is a gift, doing is the act. When a person calls you up, allowing you an opportunity for work in a field you love, then you give nothing back; it's almost insulting to the point of actually being a douche. Let me explain; Anyone can do. Though, doing is the hardest part of doing. I mean, how long have you laid in bed because you didn't want grab the remote? Case closed... doing is the hardest part. The point is, respect the opportunity you were given when someone calls you up to do what you love. Just take a moment to let that sink into your head.

I've said in the past; “When I perform, I am performing for all those who've performed before me and all those who wish they could have the chance to perform now.” My grandfather taught me that. He played guitar. He said to be once; “Tom, get out of here.” wait, that was another time. Oh, yes, I remember now “Tom, when you play the guitar, respect it. Someone put their love into building it. Others wish they could play it. You have a chance to represent both the creator of this beautiful instrument and those wishing they could make it come alive.” God, that's so true, so beautiful.

I remember that, and turned it into my own words. So, performing is one small part of that promise. I will perform to the best of my ability. Most importantly, I will market the hell out of that event. That's right; market the event you are on. How upset would you be if you set up an event, and placed people on it and they didn't even mention it until 10 minutes before going on the stage? Think about that for a little while. Respect the business of entertainment, and being a part of this industry that you want to work within. Accomplishment comes from being a part of something bigger than yourself.

Seminar

• Seminar

Having been in the business for over fifteen years my time has taught me one great thing; Knowledge is power. Yeah, that old cliche'. This is very true. I've collected enough information to know I must continue collecting information to better my life as an entertainer. Better even, I get to learn from the people around me, those I study and even more so the life that I call my own. What is working, not working, how I should market, network and practice my craft the most. These are all important to my growth as an entertainer.

Seminars, especially free seminars, are priceless in the knowledge you can learn from them. Either one bit, or a maximum amount of absorbed information. I've been to a few seminars. Around libraries, schools, colleges, you name it, if it was free I jumped on it. Paid seminars make me worry a little. As, what are they trying to sell me and “Oh, you at least got $75 from me and now you want how much?” yeah, thanks, but no thanks. Besides, free is in my budget; and sticking to that budget is important to my success.

In the sense, I've turned my life around. Now, instead of only going to seminars I have started to give free seminars. What are they about? Everything I have learned over my last fifteen years of course. What helps me is discussing my earned knowledge with strangers. Having them understand me allows me to see everything I've learned in a fuller sense of the task. Why is this knowledge useful?; that's what I think about when I say things. It's important to give back too. Besides, showing / teaching what you know helps you understand it!
